Genetic Disorder: Down Syndrome

Names of Down Syndrome

This Down Syndrome is also called Trisomy 21 because it has an extra copy of chromosome 21 making three of them.

Causes of Down Syndrome

Down Syndrome is caused by a human having and extra chromosome making an extra copy of chromosome 21 through a process called nondisjunction. A person with Down Syndrome has a total of 47 chromosomes instead of 46.

Symptoms

At birth, a person with Down Syndrome has decreased muscle tone, a single crease in the palm of their hand, almond eyes, and many more. As the person ages, they may need glasses, contacts, or surgery on the eyes due to decreased vision and poorer eyes. Also as they age, they may need to have surgery in order to correct any defects because people with Down Syndrome have a higher risk of having birth defects and other incorrections.

Treatment

There is no cure to Down Syndrome, but there are multiple ways to deal with the side effects. People with Down Syndrome can take physical therapy in order to increase their muscle tone. Also, people with Down Syndrome can go to a therapist in order to try to tame their mental disabilities and to try to fit into society.

Research and Support Groups

There is current research on Down Syndrome. Even though they haven't found a cure, they are still trying to find one and ways to prevent it. Two major support groups for Down Syndrome is the National Down Syndrome Society and the National Down Syndrome Congress.

Additional Information

Roughly half of people with Down Syndrome have other health problems ranging from cataracts to heart defects. Also, people with Down Syndrome has a higher chance of developing different types of leukemia. As a person with Down Syndrome gets older, they have a higher chance of developing dementia than other people.
